The 7″ Netbook Is Dead

As I look at the large slate of netbooks available for purchase today, I am awestruck by the magnitude of the change compared to one year ago. As we entered the holiday shopping season last year, there were only a few netbooks available. In fact the term netbook was not widely adopted until May/June of this year.

The only real commercially available netbooks were Asus Eee PC 700-series models, which all had 7″ screens. (Technically, the OLPC laptop was also available via their give one, get one promotion. But I don’t consider this a commercial product.)

Today’s second-generation netbooks all have 8.9″ or 10″ displays. The difference is night and day. Not only are the displays bigger and higher resolution, but (for the most part) the keyboards are much larger and easier to use.

When the second-generation netbooks were first being introduced, I thought that perhaps the prices on the first-generation models would drop to the $199-range. That has not happened.

What we see now, is that while there are still some of these first-generation netbooks available, for the most part, retailers are phasing these out. Those that are still available have prices in the $250-$300 range.

At those prices, there is not a compelling reason to buy a 7-inch netbook. When you can get an Acer Aspire One for $299 or a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 for less than $320 ($349 less 15%), why would you even consider paying $259 or more for and Eee PC 4G?

So the way I see it, 7-inch laptops are dead.

So I really wish that mainstream blog editors would stop using 7″ netbooks as a basis for their netbook-bashing trash talk.

Mainstream Editors Badmouth Netbooks

On November 14, Brooke Crothers, editor of CNET’s nanotech blog, posted an article “AMD: Netbooks? No thanks.“  The article quotes AMD Chief Executive Dirk Meyer regarding their decision to stay out of the netbook market.  But the author quickly jumps on that bandwagon and extols the theoretical shortcomings if netbooks.

Then, just before Thanksgiving, Jason Chen, editor of Gizmodo, a well-subscribed blog covering gadgets if all kinds, wrote an article titled: “Jason Chen on why the netbook market is dead in three years

Last Saturday, Michael Arrington, founder and editor of Tech Crunch, an established blog (since 1995) covering all thing Internet, wrote a scathing article titled: “Three Reasons Why Netbooks Just Aren’t Good Enough.”

What’s going on?

I’m reminded of Mahatma Gandhi’s famous quote: “First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win.”

Over two month passed where I did not add or maintain the content on this site.  Personal issues required that I devote my time elsewhere.

Once my personal crises had passed, I debated whether to resume posting to this site, or to start a new site, or to simply give up blogging.

When I checked the activity logs, I found that, even without fresh content, the site was still drawing about 50 unique visitor every day.  On average, each visitor viewed 2.2 pages per visit.  For the prior 30 day period, pageviews totaled over 3,500.

I was astounded.  I expected that the site to be completely dead.

What an encouragement that was to me.  That level of activity indicated that people saw value in the information that we are providing.

Once I learned this, the decision to resume blogging and to bring the information up-to-date was a simple one.

By the way, it’s about 10:45pm.  Today’s log shows 512 pageviews from 104 unique visitors.  We truly thank you for your support.

Price Comparison Charts Overhauled

In the time that I was away, my daily cron jobs which refresh the price information performed flawlessly.  During my brief hiatus, new models were introduced and older models were discontinued, so the charts were somewhat out-of-date.

In addition, I was not happy with the way the price charts worked.  We gather data from a number of different sources (Amazon, Shopzilla, direct merchants, etc.).  Each source was presented separately.

So I took some time to rewrite the interface to mash all the data together and present it in a single table sorted by lowest price to highest.

Of course, the change requires that I do individual maintenance on each and every product.  I’ve completed work on all of the Acer Aspire One models. Take a look at this example.

I’ll be updating the rest of the products over the upcoming days.

Aspire One Cheatsheet Updated

I’ve updated my Aspire One cheatsheet that shows all of the different versions that are currently available.

When I am gathering data for our price comparison tables, I sometimes have a hard time knowing whether offering from one merchant are the same version as another merchant. This helps me keep things straight. Hopefully it will help you, too.
